Social Studies Education emphasizes research, theoretical frameworks, and educator development. Our community examines the complex interpretations of history and civic engagement within American educational systems. Through academic studies and investigations, participants delve into areas like social studies pedagogy, diversity in education, and enhancing literacy via social studies content.
Our graduate programs concentrate on urban educational settings, mandating that applicants possess or are working toward three years of classroom experience. These degrees aim to support current social studies educators in deepening their appreciation for multilingual and multicultural environments when shaping concepts of active citizenship education. Participants acquire techniques to become inspiring instructors and develop dynamic lesson plans for students. Every curriculum must incorporate a minimum of six credit hours from external departments. The M.Ed. program permits up to nine credits of advanced undergraduate classes (allocated as: six credits in Curriculum and Instruction plus three external credits, or three internal credits with six external credits). The M.A. program allows up to six credits of upper-level undergraduate coursework.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: December 01 for fall
