This MA Professional Track program is tailored for students transitioning to Journalism from different academic backgrounds or seeking to enhance their professional skills. The degree entails completing 30 credit hours of coursework along with a professional internship. Previous students have secured internships with notable organizations including The Texas Tribune, The Texas Observer, Sports Illustrated, Texas Monthly, Spectrum News, McGregor Mirror, The Austin Chronicle, The Briscoe Center, The Horn FM, The Austin Monitor, and AARP.com.
The MA Pro Track caters to three distinct student profiles:
Individuals with minimal journalism experience looking to make a complete career transition, such as moving from engineering, political science, or business into journalism.
Those holding an undergraduate journalism degree and/or professional experience who aim to broaden and specialize their skills, or shift focus within journalism—for instance, transitioning from daily reporting to foreign correspondence or from writing to visual storytelling.
Journalism professionals from international media systems who wish to gain insight into the objectives, ethics, and practices of U.S. journalism.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
