As the world's longest-running science journalism program with global recognition, we welcome inquisitive minds and skilled writers from all walks of life who embrace our vision that compelling true narratives can transform society. With over four decades of distinguished history and a close-knit network of 476+ successful graduates (making it by far the most extensive science journalism alumni community), we dedicate ourselves to the rewarding mission of training future science communicators who approach scientific, medical, and environmental coverage with both enthusiasm and accuracy.

New York offers unparalleled opportunities for emerging science journalists, with SHERP serving as the vibrant core of this ecosystem. Our students secure bylines and internships at numerous prestigious media organizations, frequently working alongside SHERP alumni in editorial roles. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on, advanced storytelling techniques. While writing, reporting, and text editing form the foundation, multimedia skills receive equal emphasis. SHERP students begin video production within their first week and later expand into podcasting, coding, data visualization, and data analysis. Assignments span from breaking news pieces to in-depth investigations and even book proposals. Each graduate leaves with an impressive collection of published work across various formats, including contributions to our acclaimed Scienceline publication, which attracts over a million annual readers. Our strategic location in New York and affiliation with NYU—a premier scientific research institution—enables us to host more than 120 annual guest speakers, including journalists and researchers, who participate in classes and our Kavli Conversations on Science Communication series.

Qualification Requirements

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute accepts candidates with bachelor's degrees in any field and with a wide variety of experience. We look at the quality of applicants writing and insights as displayed in the personal statement, their undergraduate transcripts, their GRE scores if submitted and their recommendations. We accept clips (published examples of applicants work) submitted with applications, and recommend that applicants submit any clips they have. But clips are rarely a deciding factor in the applicant review process. The GRE is not required for any journalism programs. In some cases it is optional and will be considered if submitted. GSAS recommends that applicants achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 100 on the internet-based test (equivalent to 250 on the computer-based test or 600 on the paper-based test). For the IELTS, a minimum overall band score of at least 7 is recommended.
