The Psychology Department unites exceptional faculty, staff, and students at all levels to advance our scientific and educational goals. Fundamentally, Psychology aims to unravel the intricacies of human behavior through diverse lenses - exploring how neural processes shape actions, how mental health conditions influence conduct, and how to create impactful treatments for psychological wellness. Our research spans from microscopic neural activity to macroscopic cultural influences on behavior, covering every scale in between. As a modern scientific discipline, psychology continuously embraces innovative methodologies, frequently transcending conventional academic divides.
Graduate studies primarily involve specialized coursework, seminars, literature review, and research within chosen subfields, with students advised to consult their area advisors before selecting classes. Certain department-wide requirements ensure all students gain comprehensive exposure to psychological science.
The Developmental Psychology Program equips students with extensive theoretical knowledge and research skills in human development. While emphasizing fundamental research questions, the curriculum also accommodates applied investigations. This program prepares graduates for careers in academia and various research environments by fostering active research participation from enrollment. Much of this developmental research takes place at the Children's Research Center, which features specialized testing spaces, observation areas, workspaces, and research materials.
