The Human Development, Culture, & Learning Sciences (HDCLS) specialization serves as a foundational academic discipline, providing the scientific and theoretical framework for research and practice in Educational Psychology.
The Human Development and Culture Concentration aims to equip graduate students with knowledge in developmental, social, and personality psychology theories, preparing them for careers in teaching and research. A central theme across all HDCLS topics is examining how culture shapes human development and outcomes. Students develop expertise in both analyzing research and producing original studies. Doctoral graduates often pursue roles as college instructors, university researchers, or professionals in human service organizations. PhD candidates are also trained to mentor others in research methodologies while actively contributing to scholarly inquiry.
Specialized courses in developmental, personality, and social psychology cater to students focusing on academic and research careers. Curriculum covers diverse subjects including youth development, social psychology's role in education, family dynamics, aging processes, childhood cognitive growth, sociocultural factors in learning, cultural and personality impacts on behavior, assessment theories, and specialized seminar topics. Research opportunities exist through campus resources and faculty-led projects, with coursework and practical experiences tailored to individual career goals.
Academic programs and research initiatives are customized to align with each student's unique requirements, background, and aspirations. After fulfilling core coursework, students collaborate with faculty advisors to design personalized study plans that align with their research interests and professional objectives.
