This specialization immerses students in both theoretical and applied aspects of urban and regional economic development, covering topics like regional growth theories, domestic population movements, corporate site selection, and neighborhood revitalization. The curriculum also explores the political dimensions of economic development. The School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation provides a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning and Design, with collaborative opportunities across Urban Studies and Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, and The National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education. Graduates emerge prepared for academic careers in Urban Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Real Estate Development, or Landscape Architecture departments, while also gaining qualifications for research roles and leadership positions across government, corporate, and nonprofit organizations.
