The University of Texas' history graduate program primarily focuses on doctoral candidates, with master's degree admissions being rare exceptions. Typically, students join our program either with an existing M.A. from another university or earn one here while progressing toward their Ph.D. Bachelor's degree holders may also opt to advance directly to Ph.D. studies without obtaining a master's. UT Austin provides exceptional resources for graduate history research across numerous specializations. Boasting over 60 faculty members, top-tier library and archival holdings, and a vibrant community of 80+ graduate students, the university stands as a premier institution for advanced historical scholarship and education.
Most students either enter our program already holding an M.A. from another institution or earn an M.A. in our program en route to the Ph.D. Students entering with a bachelor’s degree may also choose to proceed directly to a Ph.D. without taking an M.A.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
