The American Studies program at UT Austin provides engaging courses taught by renowned faculty committed to exploring America's cultural intricacies. Our curriculum examines the nation's history within worldwide perspectives, border formations, and representational meanings to critically analyze ideologies, systems, and social disparities. Utilizing interdisciplinary methods across Anthropology, Art History, Ethnic Studies, Film/Media Studies, Gender/Queer Studies, Geography/Urban Studies, History, and Sociology, our courses analyze diverse materials—from literature and music to digital media—to decode racial, class, gender, sexual, and disability narratives.
PhD candidates receive six years of guaranteed financial support through teaching roles in Liberal Arts, with potential full fellowships. This includes monthly stipends, tuition coverage, health insurance, plus research and conference travel funds. Graduate students gain teaching experience by designing specialized seminars rather than large introductory classes, allowing them to refine their instructional methods and develop unique course content.
UT Austin's American Studies Graduate Program fosters interdisciplinary research into U.S. cultures across local and global contexts. We develop skilled cultural interpreters capable of analyzing diverse materials—from historical documents to pop culture—to understand complex societal patterns. Emphasizing civic engagement, we train students to become articulate writers, compelling communicators, and nuanced critical thinkers equipped to navigate our multicultural world's political, economic, and social dimensions.
