Located within the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, GW's American Studies program stands among the country's most challenging and forward-thinking academic offerings. The program features a dedicated team of 11 full-time faculty alongside 9 affiliated and associated professors, focusing on cross-disciplinary cultural examination through lenses including anthropology, architectural history, art history, English, folklife, geography, media studies, history, performance studies, and political theory. Key areas of expertise include cultural history and studies, art and visual culture, race and ethnic studies, gender and sexuality, transnational perspectives, urban spatial studies, political/public cultures, and religion.
Doctoral candidates design customized study plans across three interconnected fields that align with their academic passions. These interdisciplinary concentrations address central questions in American studies and related fields like art history, English, history, and political science. Early in their coursework, students cultivate research projects through seminar participation and workshops, frequently utilizing Washington DC's abundant archival collections and research institutions. The department actively encourages students to develop foreign language proficiency throughout their studies.
