Performance majors undergo professional applied training under the guidance of our distinguished artist faculty. Alongside weekly private lessons, students study music theory and history, join ensembles and chamber groups, and perform in public recitals.
Weekly studio classes foster a tight-knit community, offering solo performance chances and discussions on orchestral/operatic excerpts, stage fright, teaching methods, practice techniques, and connecting with audiences. The program features visiting artists like Chicago Symphony's Robert Chen, Grammy-nominated flutist Brandon Patrick George, and Metropolitan Opera regular Rafael Davila (a Butler School graduate). Each year, the UT Symphony Orchestra hosts a Concerto Competition where brass, wind, percussion, string, and piano students vie for the chance to perform as soloists with the orchestra during the season.
