The Studio Art program provides in-depth artistic training within a supportive community, ideal for students aiming for graduate studies or professional careers in visual arts. Instead of specializing in one medium (like Painting or Photography), the undergraduate curriculum features two Studio Art degrees, both enabling students to explore coursework across five distinct disciplines.
In their initial year, Studio Art students begin with the First-Year Core Program—a foundational series taken by all department newcomers—which develops essential technical and conceptual skills while preparing them for advanced degree coursework. As they progress, students can experiment with diverse media within the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to higher-level classes.
Complementing studio practice, students are urged to attend lectures and seminars featuring guest artists and critics. Seniors gain hands-on experience by helping curate and present work in a yearly public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the tools to establish an independent artistic practice while pursuing professional opportunities like gallery representation, residencies, fellowships, and grants.
