The Studio Art program provides an immersive education within a supportive environment for those aiming to advance to graduate studies or establish careers in visual arts. Instead of specializing in individual mediums like Painting or Photography, the undergraduate curriculum features two Studio Art degrees that enable students to explore coursework spanning five distinct disciplines.
In their initial year, Studio Art undergraduates familiarize themselves with the department and their chosen major through the First-Year Core Program—a foundational series of courses designed to develop essential technical and conceptual skills while preparing them for higher-level degree work. As students progress, they can experiment with diverse media across the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to specialized courses.
Complementing studio instruction, students are urged to attend lectures and discussions led by visiting artists and critics. Senior participants also get to contribute to organizing and showcasing their work in a yearly public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the tools to cultivate an independent artistic practice while pursuing professional opportunities like gallery representation, residencies, and grants.
Sculpture & Extended Media offers students diverse avenues to refine both technical abilities and conceptual approaches within sculpture's evolving landscape. Faculty members leverage extensive expertise to introduce fresh perspectives on contemporary art and cultural trends. Central to Sculpture & Extended Media is fostering—through critique and discussion—an inventive investigation of materials for artistic expression.
