The Studio Art program provides an immersive educational experience within a supportive community, ideal for those aiming for graduate studies or professional careers in visual arts. Instead of specializing in one medium (like Painting or Photography), the undergraduate curriculum features two Studio Art degrees, both enabling students to explore coursework spanning five distinct disciplines.
In their initial year, Studio Art students begin with the First-Year Core Program—a series of foundational courses required for all department newcomers. These classes develop essential technical and conceptual skills, laying the groundwork for advanced degree studies. As students progress, they can experiment with diverse media across the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to higher-level courses.
Complementing studio work, students are urged to attend lectures and seminars featuring guest artists and critics. Seniors also get the chance to contribute to organizing and showcasing their work in an annual public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the tools to develop an independent artistic practice and pursue professional opportunities like gallery representation, residencies, and grants. Photography & Media students gain both technical expertise and creative vision to craft compelling imagery. Courses emphasize the intersection of photography and art, pushing students to rethink conventions and refine their personal approaches. Through instruction in traditional and digital techniques, faculty offer a comprehensive perspective on both the craftsmanship and conceptual underpinnings of photographic art.
