JMU's photography program fosters an innovative, cross-disciplinary approach to creating images. The coursework balances foundational photographic techniques (such as 35mm manual camera operation and black-and-white darkroom processes with silver gelatin materials) with cutting-edge digital imaging technologies.
Our program highlights the dynamic relationship between technical skill, materials, and artistic vision. We motivate students to push boundaries as they develop projects informed by individual perspectives, art history, and critical theory. With diverse intermediate and advanced courses available each term, learners collaborate closely with instructors to refine their creative concepts within today's art world context.

We maintain that artistic creation stimulates broad-minded thinking and cultivates meaningful connections with our surroundings. Our goal is to equip students with both technical mastery and conceptual depth, empowering them to meaningfully interact with the world through their art.
