Welcome to the undergraduate program in Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. Our department is home to approximately 600 undergraduate students pursuing their Bachelor of Arts degree. This program emphasizes foundational training in sociological theory, research methods, and statistics, complemented by diverse course options spanning criminology, demography, education, family studies, gender studies, health, political development, race relations, and social inequality.
Our graduates frequently advance to prestigious graduate programs and law schools nationwide, or embark on successful careers in government, private industry, and non-profit organizations. Undergraduates have opportunities to collaborate with faculty on research projects, with the Sociology Honors Program and Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Honors Society forming the centerpiece of upper-level student engagement. Sociology explores how individuals create social structures and respond to challenges like economic disparities, religious trends, racial dynamics, and criminal justice systems. Using scientific approaches - from statistical analysis to surveys, experiments, and interviews - sociologists work to understand the interconnected nature of society's components.
