The curriculum offers rigorous specialization, allowing students to concentrate on specific departmental tracks while developing professional methodologies for career success.
Earning a Geography, Sustainability Studies, or Urban Studies BA equips graduates with versatile skills and holistic perspectives on human-environment relationships, preparing them for advancement beyond initial employment. Department alumni pursue diverse opportunities across government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and corporate enterprises. Students should explore university career resources including Liberal Arts Career Services and Texas Career Engagement. We highly encourage enrollment in Handshake, the LACS career platform. The Office of Sustainability maintains outstanding online career development materials. The Geography and Environment Department provides academic internship opportunities (URB 360 or SUS 379L) blending professional experience with coursework.
Sustainability means fulfilling current requirements without jeopardizing future generations' capacity to meet theirs. Its foundational elements encompass essential human necessities, varied ecosystems, and life quality encompassing cultural values and rights. Geography serves as an ideal major for sustainability-focused students, examining environmental systems, human-environment interactions, ecological impacts, and sociocultural dimensions while teaching practical skills like geospatial technologies and offering experiential learning. The Sustainability concentration investigates historical, contemporary, and prospective relationships among nature, society, and progress. This track enhances liberal arts education for emerging leaders across public, private, educational, and nonprofit sectors while providing strong preparation for graduate studies in law, medicine, public policy, business, environmental sciences, and geography.
