Founded in 1998, our distinctive Ph.D. Program in Transatlantic History examines the connections between peoples and regions around the Atlantic from the 15th century to today. Differing from traditional doctoral programs constrained by geographic, political, or thematic limits, ours investigates cultural exchanges and interconnected developments among European, African, and American societies over the past six centuries. The Transatlantic History Doctoral Program provides scholars with comparative analysis of historical evolution across Atlantic-bordering continents. This innovative Ph.D. initiative reflects contemporary historical scholarship that expands traditional approaches, moves beyond national narratives, and fosters fresh transnational and comparative viewpoints. Leveraging specialized collections in UT Arlington Libraries, the Transatlantic History Ph.D. program (covering 1492-present) delivers a rigorous curriculum blending core and specialized courses. Admission requires a B.A. or M.A. in history.
