Qualification Requirements

The Graduate College sets residence and other general requirements for the Ph.D. Formal application for admission to the program is made online through the Graduate College Admissions Office. The following departmental rules supplement, but do not supersede the Graduate College requirements. The student submits an application for admission accompanied by required transcripts of previous academic work. In addition, the Department of History requires:

Three letters of reference, preferably from the applicant's professors,
A statement of purpose explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue the Ph.D., what fields of history interest the applicant, and what the applicant hopes to do with the degree. (approximately 500 words),
A single writing sample, preferably (though not necessarily in History). This can be a master's thesis, essay, term paper or seminar paper. These are usually of scholarly article length, though MA theses of up to 100 pages will be considered.
Completed applications are forwarded to the Department of History for review. The Graduate Studies Committee uses the following criteria in their admissions decisions.

GPA in Undergraduate and graduate courses.
The quality of the writing sample.
The strength of the letters of recommendation.
Scoring 6.5 or higher on the IELTS, Scoring 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT)
