The Materials Science and Engineering graduate program equips students with core knowledge about material behaviors and their chemical, electrical, mechanical, and physical characteristics. The master's curriculum readies graduates for professional roles in the field or advanced doctoral studies. Students pursuing master's or Ph.D. degrees can specialize in areas like metals, polymers, ceramics, composites, electronic materials, and other specialized domains. While housed in the College of Engineering, this interdisciplinary program collaborates extensively with faculty from both the College of Science and College of Engineering. Beyond core materials courses, students can explore relevant subjects in aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics.
The Ph.D. program adopts an interdisciplinary framework, combining mandatory Materials Science and Engineering coursework with electives across aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, materials science, and physics. This research-intensive degree demands original investigation in an area approved by the Graduate Studies Committee. Doctoral candidates work under the guidance of faculty members from any participating department within the Materials Science and Engineering Program.
Applicants for the doctoral degrees must have either a baccalaureate or master's degree in engineering or science. Applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a doctoral degree without completing a master's degree may apply for admission into the B.S. to Ph.D. Track. The minimum admission requirements to this highly competitive track are the same as those for all doctoral applicants.
Applicants are expected to submit a score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, a score of at least 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS, or a minimum TOEFL iBT total score of 79. Further, when the TOEFL iBT is taken, sectional scores of at least 22 on the writing section, 21 on the speaking section, 20 on the reading section, and 16 on the listening section are preferred.
Graduate Application Priority Dates - Fall: March 15; Spring: August 15; Summer: February 15.
