The plant sciences major offers both thesis and project pathways, each supervised by a graduate committee that includes the primary advisor and at least two additional faculty members. Research opportunities span diverse crop categories such as fruits, vegetables, weeds, cereals, grains, turfgrass, ornamental species, and public horticulture. Students in this program can conduct investigations tackling issues in plant protection, molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, physiology, ecology, cultivation techniques, and management strategies. A declared concentration area is required for all students in the program.

Qualification Requirements

To be considered for admission, students should have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with evidence of ability to do work of graduate quality.
Successful applicants to the Plant Sciences Graduate program are expected to have at least a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale.
Prerequisite courses may be required by the faculty mentor and graduate student advisory committee if the applicant has insufficient background.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to make contact with prospective major professors early in the application process.

All materials must be submitted electronically directly to the Graduate School.
To the Office of Graduate Admissions submit an online application (with non-refundable application fee), official transcripts, and scores from the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and TOEFL or IELTS, if applicable.
The online application procedure will direct the applicant to submit an updated resume or CV, a short statement of professional goals and reasons for applying to Plant Sciences, answers to a professional biosketch self-assessment, and contact information for three evaluators who will provide letters of reference.
References should be capable of assessing the applicant's suitability for graduate work in plant sciences.
Final admission is contingent upon the applicant contacting and obtaining a commitment from a graduate research faculty member to serve as his/her graduate mentor (major professor).
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a 2.7 out of 4.0 GPA or 3.0 GPA during the senior year of undergraduate study.
Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
a total score of 550 or equivalent on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), or
a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
