As a plant biology graduate student, you'll collaborate with faculty across all biological scales, from molecular to ecosystem levels, pursuing either fundamental or practical research topics. Given the program's interdisciplinary approach and faculty's wide-ranging expertise, you can specialize in fields like cellular and developmental biology, evolutionary ecology, plant-microbe relationships, genomics and genetic studies, or plant-environment dynamics.
The Plant Biology Graduate Program (PB Program) offers advanced and undergraduate education while promoting faculty research partnerships across all dimensions of plant science. Distinct from conventional departmental structures, PB enables students to choose advisors from four campus departments: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology(link is external), Biology(link is external), Environmental Conservation(link is external), and Stockbridge School of Agriculture(link is external) or PB-affiliated faculty at Five Colleges: Amherst(link is external), Hampshire(link is external), Mount Holyoke(link is external), Smith(link is external), UMass Amherst(link is external). With research concentrations in Cellular Development, Evolutionary Ecology, Genomic Genetics, and Plant-Environment Systems, PB scholars and professors can investigate biological phenomena at any scale while selecting theoretical or application-driven projects. The shared focus on plant systems creates interdisciplinary connections among PB participants.
