The Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Counseling offers two focus areas: school counseling (5042) and clinical mental health counseling (5041). The school counseling track equips professionals to assist educators, school staff, and families in fostering students' academic success, career readiness, and personal development. Graduates will be qualified to work in educational settings ranging from Pre-K through 12th grade. This counseling program meets the requirements for School Counseling Licensure as established by Tennessee's Division of Teacher Education and Accreditation.
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization trains practitioners to handle diverse wellness, prevention, and mental health issues in clinical settings.
For School Counselor licensure, the State Department of Education requires candidates without teaching background to complete a semester-long school orientation (PreK-12) early in their studies. This involves successfully finishing Counseling 712 Learning Theories along with 30 observation hours (split equally between Elementary K-6 and Secondary 7-12 environments).
