The History Department faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville aims to equip students for diverse career paths in historical professions, including preservation, public history, and education. Our curriculum focuses on research methodologies and perspectives that cross national borders, adopting a worldwide viewpoint. The master's program provides two tracks: a thesis option or coursework with a final exam. Doctoral candidates must complete a dissertation, while those pursuing only a master's degree can opt for our terminal MA program, which has no language proficiency prerequisites.

Qualification Requirements
Successful completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, preferably with a major in history.
A 3.00 overall graduate grade point average is required to remain in good standing.
MA students must complete the MA examination requirements no later than the semester following the completion of 30 graduate credit hours.
A student who fails the MA examination must repeat the examination no later than the following semester.
A student who fails the examination a second time or does not take the examination when required will be dropped from the graduate program.
Thesis students will sit for a two-hour oral examination that will cover the thesis and the major field.
Students not completing a thesis will sit for a written examination in their major field.
Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
a total score of 550 or equivalent on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), or
a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
