The doctoral program offers studies in two main areas: 1) European History, with concentrations available in a) Pre-Modern Europe, featuring strong research opportunities in Muslim-Christian interactions, Crusade studies, and Mediterranean religious cultures, and b) Modern Europe, focusing particularly on German historical studies. The second major area, 2) American History, provides specialized study paths in Atlantic/transnational perspectives, 19th-century studies, religious history, Southern U.S. history, and African-American historical research.
