The department provides a Five-Year BSMS program, enabling qualified students to earn both a BS (majoring in civil engineering) and an MS (in civil or environmental engineering). A key feature allows students to apply up to 6 hours of approved graduate courses toward their senior undergraduate electives, counting these credits for both their bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Tennessee. This program is tailored for students pursuing their Master of Science at the University of Tennessee, as other institutions might not accept these courses for graduate credit if they have already been used to fulfill Bachelor of Science requirements.

Qualification Requirements
- You must meet with the director of the 5-year BS/MS program in your department to ensure you meet the departmental requirements for admission. The upper portion of the Civil Engineering 5-year BS/MS Admission Form must be filled out by the student and signed by the director.
- Each semester you intend to take a course for graduate credit and have it count toward your BS degree, you must meet with the director for approval of the graduate course to count toward your MS degree. This step must be completed at the beginning of the semester you are taking the course.
If your native language is not English, you must demonstrate English proficiency unless you are a US citizen or a permanent resident.
