The program's curriculum aims to develop graduates who meet modern professional standards and employer demands, especially in cultivating problem-solving abilities and leadership competencies for laboratory environments. Those completing the program gain the necessary skills to work proficiently as medical laboratory scientists (MLS) across various laboratory settings, with the potential to advance into managerial, instructional, or advisory roles.
This medical laboratory science program spans two years of specialized study. Participants first finish two years of foundational coursework at partner institutions before undertaking 21 months of professional training at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Memphis campus. Hands-on clinical practice is woven into the entire educational journey. The program structure fosters collaboration with peers from other health disciplines while blending theoretical knowledge with practical laboratory techniques.
To graduate, students must successfully complete either a final comprehensive exam encompassing all curriculum components or periodic assessments as determined by faculty. These evaluations may include written tests, practical demonstrations, or a combination of both. When course sequences appear in the program outline, each listed course serves as a prerequisite for the next. Typically, advancing to subsequent terms or earning graduation requires passing all courses within each academic period.
