Established in 1869, the Herbert College of Agriculture (Herbert) traces its origins to when the university became Tennessee's designated land-grant institution under federal legislation. This status allowed the university to introduce agricultural education for the first time. Subsequent federal laws further supported agricultural research and extension programs to share discoveries with Tennessee communities. The college has evolved from focusing solely on traditional farming disciplines to encompassing natural resources and agribusiness studies. Its current academic programs reflect the full spectrum of contemporary agricultural and environmental sciences. Together with UT AgResearch (previously known as the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station), UT Extension, and the College of Veterinary Medicine, Herbert forms part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Faculty members utilize research facilities at UT AgResearch centers statewide, conducting groundbreaking work in diverse areas from biotechnology to agricultural economics. These research facilities also enhance student learning, while extension initiatives create valuable mentorship and employment prospects. The animal science program offers specializations including animal industries, bioscience, and pre-veterinary medicine options.
