The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the broader University population, it provides foundational music courses for General Education, ensemble performance experiences, private instruction, and introductory classes in piano, voice, and guitar, alongside Music minor options. The Bachelor of Music program equips students for professional musicianship, with graduates demonstrating proficiency in: 1) score reading and performance error detection, 2) musical analysis and identification of core compositional elements, 3) delivering stylistically authentic interpretations of standard repertoire. Admission and graduation standards align with National Association of Schools of Music guidelines and Tennessee teacher certification requirements. Undergraduate offerings include two degree paths: the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music and the more specialized Bachelor of Music (B.M.), featuring five focus areas: instrumental performance, vocal performance, composition, instrumental music education, and vocal music education. The B.M. curriculum dedicates about 66% of its four-year structure to musical training. The music education track specifically prepares future K-12 music educators, blending academic coursework with pedagogical training for state teaching certification. All programs provide solid foundations for advanced graduate studies in music.
