The College of Music's primary goal is to deliver exceptional training in musical disciplines while fostering innovation and scholarly work across composition, education, music history, teaching methods, performance, and music theory. The institution enhances musical learning for its students, the wider university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both first-year and transfers) must complete an applied music audition and theory assessment. Those pursuing music education, music history, or music theory/composition must also conduct a faculty interview in their chosen field. Official music major status requires successful audition completion and, where relevant, interview finalization. A theory placement test is also mandatory, with results influencing course assignments in both practical and theoretical studies. These evaluations should occur during a campus visit before classes commence. Prospective students should arrange these assessments with the College of Music well in advance, preferably before summer orientation. Music education candidates follow identical audition processes as performance majors. Following their second year or required coursework completion, students undergo an Admissions Board review. Successful candidates gain entry to the Teacher Education Program, qualifying them for advanced education coursework.
