The College of Music aims to deliver exceptional training in musical arts while fostering creativity and scholarly work across composition, education, musicology, pedagogy, performance, and theory. Through this mission, the college enhances the musical and academic experiences of its students, the university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both freshmen and transfers) are required to audition for applied music and complete a theory assessment. Those pursuing music education, musicology, or music theory/composition must also interview with a faculty member in their chosen field. Official music major status is granted only after passing the audition and, where relevant, finishing the interview. A theory placement test will also be administered to guide course assignments in applied music and theory. These evaluations—audition, theory test, and interview—should be finalized during a campus visit before classes commence. Applicants are encouraged to arrange these appointments with the College of Music well in advance, preferably before summer orientation. Music education candidates follow the same audition process as performance majors. By the end of their second year or upon completing prerequisite coursework, students will meet with an Admissions Board for review. A favorable recommendation from this board grants access to the Teacher Education Program and upper-division education courses. Music education students must adhere to all policies set by the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, even though their degree is conferred by the College of Arts and Sciences.
