The Critical Race and Ethnic Studies program in UT Knoxville's Sociology Department provides diverse undergraduate and graduate courses that equip students to analyze contemporary racial and ethnic issues. Using critical historical perspectives, these courses examine how racial and ethnic classifications intersect with systemic inequalities across various regions. As fundamental social constructs, race and ethnicity impact virtually all human activities. These identity markers affect everything from personal decisions like romantic partnerships to global controversies including law enforcement brutality and activist campaigns. They shape health outcomes, international relations, and worldwide migration patterns. This academic concentration helps students challenge mainstream narratives about race and ethnicity while exploring broader patterns of social hierarchy, injustice, and human experience.
