The Religious Studies Department at the University of Tennessee fosters rigorous, comparative examination of religions without privileging any single tradition. Utilizing diverse approaches—including historical, anthropological, textual, and theoretical frameworks—the department emphasizes the rich diversity and intricate nature of religious beliefs, practices, communities, and institutions. Faculty members possess broad expertise, with teaching and research covering major world religions like Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, as well as indigenous traditions across regions including the Americas, Africa, the Ancient Mediterranean, and Asia. Their work explores connections between religion and various aspects of society, including politics, gender, violence, sports, media, and the arts. Universal Tracking (uTrack) serves as an academic guidance system to support students in achieving timely graduation. To maintain progress, students must fulfill specific semester-by-semester requirements called milestones, which involve completing designated courses and maintaining minimum GPA standards. These uTrack provisions apply exclusively to full-time students pursuing degree programs.
