The Music Division aims to foster a deep appreciation for musical artistry through top-tier educational programs. Serving the broader University population, the department provides foundational music courses, ensemble performance experiences, private instruction, introductory classes in piano, voice and guitar, along with Music minor options. The Bachelor of Music program equips students for professional music careers, with graduates demonstrating proficiency in: 1) score reading and performance error detection, 2) musical analysis and element identification, 3) stylistically accurate performances of standard repertoire. Admission and graduation standards align with National Association of Schools of Music guidelines and Tennessee teacher certification requirements. Two undergraduate degrees are available: the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Music and the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) with five specializations: instrumental/vocal performance, composition, and instrumental/vocal music education. The B.A. combines substantial music study with liberal arts, dedicating about one-third of its four-year curriculum to music while allowing interdisciplinary electives. The more intensive B.M. program focuses two-thirds of coursework on music. The music education track prepares future K-12 music educators through a structured blend of general education, musical training, and pedagogical methods, culminating in teaching certification. All programs provide solid foundations for graduate-level music studies.
