The Interdisciplinary Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies enables students to investigate the civilizations and communities of western Europe, the Mediterranean region, and the Middle East from the fall of the Roman Empire to the 1600s. This academic program examines subjects related to these historical eras along with interdisciplinary methodologies drawn from humanities, social sciences, linguistics, and creative arts. The focus lies on analyzing unique, historically distant societies - their material environments, governing structures, belief systems, and forms of cultural expression. The program motivates learners to approach history as foreign territory, thereby gaining fresh perspectives on how these ancient influences continue to affect our globally connected modern society.
