The Marine Biology program at USCB gained state accreditation in 2020, though students have pursued marine-focused coursework since the university's inception. Based on the Beaufort campus, the program allows students to complete all core classes locally. Graduates specializing in marine biology will develop a sophisticated grasp of oceanic ecosystems and humanity's dual capacity to both benefit and harm these increasingly vulnerable environments. Beaufort County serves as an ideal natural research site, featuring an extensive tidal river network and the Port Royal Sound - the biggest natural harbor along America's eastern seaboard. Additionally, the county encompasses roughly 10% of the smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) marshes found along the entire Atlantic coast.
