The Marine Biology License Option program enables students specializing in marine biology to train for officer positions on seafaring vessels through Texas A&M Maritime Academy's licensing program. This course of study covers fundamental marine biology concepts while also offering classes that qualify graduates for a Third Mate license, valid for ocean-going vessels of any size in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
This streamlined version of the Marine Biology program focuses on practical fieldwork skills needed for research vessel operations. Students pursuing this degree must successfully complete the Third Mate licensing exam and meet all other Texas A&M graduation requirements. Note that some U.S. Coast Guard-mandated courses require a minimum grade of 70% (C) to pass.
