Today's effective school counselors must be adaptable professionals equipped to handle the diverse social-emotional, academic, career, and developmental requirements of an ever-changing student body. Our Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs-approved curriculum trains future leaders in school counseling to promote healthy development and drive positive change, benefiting both individual students and entire educational systems. Across most U.S. states, including New York, public K-12 schools mandate state certification for counseling positions. New York offers two certification levels widely recognized nationwide:
Initial Certification and Professional Certification.
Students can complete their required practicum and dual internship placements in elementary, middle, or high school settings based on their preferences. Unique internship options are available at East High School, an urban institution managed by the University of Rochester's Educational Partnership Organization (EPO).
The Internship Certificate enables graduate students in our counseling program to gain paid experience as school counselors while completing their master's degree. This specialized certification is tailored for candidates meeting both New York State Education Department and Warner School qualifications.
