Today's effective school counselors must be adaptable professionals, thoroughly equipped to handle the diverse social-emotional, academic, career, and developmental requirements of an ever-evolving student body. Our Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs-approved school counseling curricula train individuals for leadership positions in educational settings, where they'll promote healthy growth and champion systemic improvements, benefiting both individual learners and entire school communities. Across most U.S. states, including New York which offers two certification tiers (Initial and Professional), state credentials are mandatory for K-12 public school counseling roles - qualifications frequently honored nationwide.
Fieldwork requirements, including practicum and dual internship placements, can be completed in elementary, middle, or high schools based on preference, with unique opportunities available at East High School - an urban institution managed by the University of Rochester's Educational Partnership Organization.
The Internship Certificate enables graduate counseling students to gain paid school counseling experience while completing their master's program, available to candidates meeting both New York State Education Department and Warner School specifications.
Community Track - Designed for students seeking additional youth behavioral health training, with a focus on partnership-building with local service organizations.
