Epidemiology examines how diseases spread, their causes, and patterns within human communities. As a fundamental public health discipline, it shapes health policies and clinical approaches by pinpointing disease risks and prevention opportunities. Our 34-credit MS in Epidemiology program in Public Health Sciences equips students with research methodologies to: 1) conduct studies and oversee public health initiatives targeting preventable disease factors, 2) assess population-level impacts of healthcare system changes, and 3) address the increasing demand for big data integration and analysis. Located within a major urban medical center at the University of Rochester, our program offers access to extensive clinical research resources and faculty collaborations. The University hosts multiple health science graduate programs with a diverse student population. Graduates gain qualifications for careers in academic research, corporate sectors, government, and non-profit organizations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports excellent employment prospects for epidemiologists.
This 34-credit, three-semester MS program develops students' ability to investigate disease causes and prevention in populations. We achieve this through comprehensive training in epidemiological research principles and biostatistical methods.
The curriculum comprises 31 required credits, covering core epidemiology/biostatistics courses, ethics, electives, and thesis research (6 credits). Students must present a research proposal for committee approval and publicly defend their thesis, followed by a private committee examination.
