The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective MA students must demonstrate excellent English proficiency before undertaking thesis or dissertation work, along with holding an accredited bachelor's degree.
While no audition is needed for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Composition and Music Education candidates should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their qualifications and career objectives.
As a research-oriented degree, the MA places significant importance on scholarly writing and investigation. Students must show complete English writing competency before commencing their thesis or dissertation research.
The Composition and Music Education disciplines offer both research-focused (MA) and professional-track (Master of Music) options, each with distinct curricular focuses. Unlike the MM which requires performance auditions (except for Music Leadership MA applicants), the MA typically doesn't demand this. Applicants should thoughtfully choose between MA and MM programs based on their professional aspirations.
MA candidates normally finish degree requirements within two years of full-time enrollment, though they have up to five years to complete the program. The standard residency is one academic year (two for Musicology students), with the Music Leadership MA structured as an intensive one-year program including two summer sessions.
