The department provides master of arts (M.A.) and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in musicology, which broadly includes music history, theory, ethnomusicology, and popular culture studies. To earn the M.A., students must show reading competency in a non-English language approved by the graduate studies director. Proficiency can be demonstrated through:
Earning a B or higher in UNC-Chapel Hill's fourth-semester (204) language course
Testing out of the fourth-semester requirement via departmental placement exams
Passing The Graduate School's Foreign Language Proficiency Assessment
Approval through a petition process supervised by the graduate studies director
The usual prerequisite for admission to graduate work leading to the M.A. is a bachelor of arts degree with a major in music, or a bachelor of music degree, comparable to those given at this university. The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
