The musicology curriculum covers the full range of musical history, from ancient chants to contemporary 20th-century compositions. This program focuses on music as a humanistic discipline, examining its societal context and applying modern analytical methods. It maintains strong connections with the music theory program. Students pursuing just the MA can complete it in three years, while the PhD alone takes six years (for those entering with an existing master's from an accredited institution). The combined MA/PhD track also spans six years total, with the MA awarded upon finishing coursework and qualifying exams. Additional details about both graduate degrees in Musicology can be found in the Music Department's Graduate Program section of UCSB's General Catalog.
