The Master of Arts (MA) is an advanced research-focused degree that prioritizes strong writing and analytical abilities. Prospective MA students must demonstrate excellent English proficiency before undertaking thesis or dissertation work, along with holding an accredited bachelor's degree.
While no audition is needed for MA admission, an interview is mandatory. Those interested in Composition and Music Education should carefully evaluate whether the MA or MM program better aligns with their qualifications and career aspirations.
As a research-intensive degree, the MA program emphasizes advanced writing and investigative capabilities. Students must show complete English language mastery before commencing their thesis or dissertation research.
The Composition and Music Education tracks can be pursued either through graduate research studies (MA) or graduate professional studies (MM). These programs differ in focus and curriculum. Notably, the MM program mandates an instrumental or vocal audition, while the MA generally doesn't - except for Music Leadership candidates. Composition and Music Education applicants should thoughtfully consider which program suits their experience and objectives.
MA candidates typically finish degree requirements within two years of full-time enrollment, though they have up to five years to complete the program. The standard residency requirement is one full academic year (or equivalent), extended to two years for musicology students. The Music Leadership MA program follows an intensive one-year format spanning two summer sessions.
