The Master of Arts in Literary Translation Studies (MALTS) program is designed for aspiring literary translators. Applicants typically hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline like languages or literature, with substantial expertise in at least one foreign literary tradition and language.
Throughout this program, students will:
Attend advanced courses covering translation theory, creative writing (fiction/poetry), and global literary works
Develop an extensive collection of translated works
Complete an internship at a publishing house specializing in literature
Engage in a culminating project involving the English translation of a full-length literary work, accompanied by a critical analysis of translation challenges and methodologies
The curriculum also provides practical knowledge about the publishing industry, including translation, editing, and book production processes. MALTS equips graduates with the necessary skills to effectively collaborate with editors, literary agents, marketing teams, and other professionals in the field of translated literature. At Rochester, all literary translation work focuses on English-language output. Students at every level compile a portfolio of their translation projects and receive faculty guidance throughout their academic journey.
