The Institute of Optics equips students with practical skills to tackle real-world challenges. Our curriculum fosters advanced technical expertise and leadership abilities. We take pride in offering tailored education, focusing on each student's academic growth. Graduates emerge with the vision to identify opportunities within challenges and drive meaningful innovation.
Optics explores light: its creation, movement, and measurement. This interdisciplinary field draws from physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, and materials science.
Optical technologies impact daily life, from corrective lenses to high-speed data transmission. Pioneering discoveries like lasers and holography stem from optical research. Our PhD program trains graduates for autonomous, innovative research across industrial, academic, and governmental sectors. With only 12-15 annual admissions, the doctoral program maintains highly selective standards.
The PhD curriculum integrates research, coursework, teaching experience, and dissertation work, typically spanning four or more years.

Qualification Requirements

DegreeA bachelor's degree in optics, physics, engineering, or a related technical field is required. A MS degree is not required for admission into the PhD program.
Grade Point Average (GPA)Minimum undergraduate GPA is 3.0 out of 4.0. In previous years, the average GPA of incoming PhD students was 3.7/4.0 and for incoming MS it was 3.4/4.0.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)The GRE is not required for the PhD program for fall 2023. It is encouraged, but not required for MS applicants. A good optics candidate has GRE scores in the 80th percentile in all categories. A Physics Subject Test is not required but a score can be submitted for consideration.
Qualified applicants have a minimum TOEFL score of 620 (paper-based test), 260 (computer-based test), or 105 (Internet test). For the IELTS, qualified applicants have a minimum score of 7.2. While a test score below the minimum score would not entirely exclude an applicant from receiving an offer, it is strongly taken into account.
MS and PhD applications for a 2024 program start will still be considered without the GRE. Applicants may still submit general GRE and/or GRE subject grades as part of their application.
