The University of Rochester's PhD program in clinical psychology follows the clinical scientist approach, equipping students for academic, research, and clinical careers. Faculty expertise covers diverse specialties such as developmental psychopathology, adolescent studies, interpersonal relationships, and statistical analysis. The curriculum offers foundational knowledge in personality theory, mental disorders, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic interventions. Students also receive cross-disciplinary instruction in social and developmental psychology, brain science, and the cognitive-emotional foundations of behavior.
Modeled on the clinical-scientist framework, Rochester's clinical psychology PhD program operates alongside two other doctoral tracks in social-personality and developmental psychology. The department additionally offers an undergraduate psychology degree and multiple minor options.
Typically, courses emphasizing psychology's social science aspects are led by our department faculty, while those treating psychology as a natural science are taught by Brain and Cognitive Sciences faculty.
