The DMA degree recognizes exceptional achievement in musical performance and instruction. To qualify, applicants must exhibit outstanding artistic skills coupled with superior intellectual capabilities.
Graduate studies in composition and music education are available through either professional practice (DMA) or academic research tracks. These programs differ in focus and curriculum. For admission, DMA applicants must complete an instrumental or vocal audition, while PhD candidates are exempt from this requirement. The DMA program uniquely emphasizes practical music application across all specializations. Both composition and music education concentrations incorporate substantial performance elements in the DMA track, contrasting sharply with the PhD program's academic orientation.
DMA conducting students focus on choral, orchestral, or wind direction while gaining experience in secondary repertoire. The program features intensive mentoring alongside extensive work with university ensembles. Conducting majors receive regular one-on-one guidance while accumulating substantial practical experience with various performance groups. Additionally, choral conducting students may pursue a concurrent sacred music certification.
