The DMA degree recognizes exceptional achievement in musical performance and instruction. To qualify, applicants must exhibit outstanding artistic skills coupled with superior intellectual capabilities.
Graduate students can pursue composition and music education through either professional studies (the DMA program) or research-focused studies. These tracks differ in their curricular focus and requirements. For admission, DMA applicants must complete an instrumental or vocal audition, while PhD candidates are exempt from this requirement. A defining characteristic of the DMA program is its strong emphasis on practical music application across all specializations. Consequently, both composition and music education concentrations within the DMA incorporate significant performance elements, contrasting sharply with their PhD counterparts.
