The Composition Program focuses on cultivating each student composer's unique talents within a vibrant, diverse setting, prioritizing close faculty-student collaboration. Faculty advisors work closely with students to understand their specific aspirations while helping them develop the technical skills needed to achieve them. The dynamic nature of our program frequently inspires students to reconsider and refine their artistic objectives.
New students start with a yearlong seminar (led by rotating faculty composers each quarter) before transitioning to individualized instruction. At the end of fall quarter in the first year and again after spring quarter, the composition community comes together for an intensive jury day. Each seminar participant receives dedicated time for their recently finished piece to be performed, recorded, and thoroughly rehearsed. Faculty composers provide in-depth feedback on every work, while students can clarify, elaborate, and seek advice. After these performances and discussions, the faculty convenes to collectively evaluate student progress and offer tailored recommendations. This distinctive approach lies at the heart of UC San Diego's program, showcasing the depth, rigor, and energy with which compositional exploration unfolds here.
