The Doctor of Philosophy program in music, offering specializations in composition, musicology, or music theory, mandates completion of at least 90 semester credit hours beyond undergraduate studies. A minimum of 60 hours must be completed at UNT, while up to 30 transfer credits from other institutions may be approved by the College of Music's Theory Coordinator. Typically, an accredited master's degree fulfills the initial 30-hour requirement. Students must fulfill residency by enrolling in two consecutive main semesters (fall/spring or spring/fall) with at least 9 credit hours per term.
Earning a PhD in music isn't simply about completing coursework - true distinction comes through comprehensive mastery of musical disciplines and demonstrated capacity for original research (in musicology or theory) or exceptional creative output (in composition).
Certain programs may involve performance laboratory or ensemble participation. Music Laboratories include choral, orchestral, band, jazz lab, and accompanying groups. Graduate students can join various ensembles such as opera theater, early music groups, NOVA ensemble, intermedia arts, brass groups, wind ensembles, jazz combos, chamber orchestra, percussion groups, string quartets, vocal ensembles, harp collective, and Mariachi Aguilas.
